Britannia Cove, Random Island, NL

This picture was taken in Britannia Cove on Random Island. Britannia Cove was originally named Porridge Cove and later changed it's name to Britannia Cove after a visit by the British Warship "Britannia".Random Island fits neatly into the shore of Northwest Trinity Bay, being separated from the adjacent "mainland" by Smith Sound on the North and the Northwest Arm of Random Sound on the south and west.

This was taken in Aquaforte, a small fishing community on the Southern Shore. Aquaforte is a little more than an hour's drive from St. John's. This boat and house are rotting together and this is symbolic of how our rural areas of our great province is slowing dying.

Torbay Houses & Graveyard

This is a scene in Torbay, a community just outside St. John's. The houses overlook a beautiful beach and harbour. The view from the front of these houses is just spectacular.

Salt Box House

This is a picture of a salt box style house taken in Bonavista, NL. The salt-box shape is said to resemble an 18th century salt box. It is one of the earlier house forms in rural Newfoundland and it is quickly vanishing.

Bonavista is Newfoundland's largest fishing community and was first settled in the late 1600's. While fishing was the principle occupation of the people of Bonavista for four centuries, fishermen also built houses, flakes, boats, and furniture. The fine buildings and unique architectural features of this town provide a great example of the skills and creativity of these craftsmen.

Bonavista is unique in that it has a large range of house styles and features, many of which are unique to the town. Finely detailed houses and notable institutional and commercial buildings all form a part of the town's landscape.

The folk architecture of Bonavista is rich in interesting details which is in contrast to most Newfoundland towns. The most common residential house type features a steeply peaked roof or seep gable as is seen in this house.

Soldier Silhouette

While observing the Remembrance Day service in St. John's I noticed the sun had gone behind one of the statutes of a soldier on the war memorial. This made for a great opportunity to make for a silhouette shot. The second photo includes two sentry guards standing under the statute of the soldier.
