The Rower
Today is the 188th running of the Royal St. John's Regetta. It is the oldest sporting event in North Americia. Thousands of residents gather around Quidi Vidi Lake to watch the boat races and participate in other social activities. The first picture above is of "The Rower". The artist is Morgan MacDonald and the statue is a gift to the residents of St. John's by Elinor Gill Ratcliffe with the support of the City of St. John's. This bronze statue is situation along the shoreline of Quidi Vidi Lake and part of the Grand Concourse walking trail system. I took these images on Canada Day, hence the Canadian flags. I included the second image so you could get a closer look at the detail in the statue. I angled it so as to get 90 degree side lighting which is best for bringing out texture and detail. I also believe the second image captures the feeling of "strength" of the rower.
